Saturday Open Bench Sessions
Introducing Open Bench Sessions at Farnham Jewellery School
From February 2024 Open Bench sessions will be available on one Saturday a month.
If you need more bench time, need access to workshop equipment, can’t sign up to weekday courses due to other commitments, or just want to have time to focus on creating your own jewellery designs, then the Saturday Open Bench sessions could interest you.
The first SATURDAY OPEN BENCH started on Saturday 24 February. It is planned to have One Saturday Open Bench per month.
The day has two sessions:
Morning (10:00-13:00) £30
Afternoon (13:30-16:00) £25
You can book one or both sessions. I will be on hand to advise and give guidance. The sessions will be similar to the weekday course sessions. You will have access to professional tools and equipment and, as with the 10-week courses, you will need to provide the precious metals for your own projects.

1-DAY Workshop - Friday 28 June 2024: INTRODUCTION TO GEMMOLOGY
Gain an insight into the fascinating world of gemmology.

Your tutor will be Jacqueline Chrismas, a fellow (FGA) of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (2009) and holder of the diploma in gem diamond (DGA, 2010). She holds an MA in Fine Art Valuation (2001) and a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE, science).

1-DAY Workshop - Friday 28 June 2024: INTRODUCTION TO GEMMOLOGY
Gain an insight into the fascinating world of gemmology.
The morning session will focus on identifying and valuing diamonds This hands-on session will cover:
- The correct use of a 10 times magnification lens (loupe) and lighting to observe the characteristics of diamonds.
- The use of 10 times lens and a diamond tester to differentiate diamond from its main simulants, such as synthetic moissanite, cubic zirconia, white sapphire, quartz and glass.
- Basic diamond (colourless) clarity and colour grading methods, including the identification of treatments such as fracture filling, dyes and lasers.
- Understanding a diamond grading report and the measures it contains to assess the overall quality of a diamond.
- A demonstration of the Gemetrix Jewellery Inspector instrument for identifying synthetic diamonds.
- Buying mounted diamonds at auction.
- An overview of the methods used to identify gemstones.
- The factors affecting the prices of coloured gemstones.
- Practices used to deceive buyers.

Make enamelled jewellery, key-rings or bookmarks or learn enamelling techniques from scratch. Aim to produce a number of test pieces, which can become pendants or brooches. Copper and enamels are included. If you would like to enamel silver, small amounts of fine silver will be available to purchase at the studio. Alternatively, please order your fine silver sheet beforehand from one of the bullion dealers.
This experimental enamelling workshop is a great opportunity to learn the art of vitreous enamelling and to learn or extend your skills in a fun jewellery studio environment.

2-DAY SHORT COURSE - Thursday 4 & Friday 5 July 2024: Keum Boo WORKSHOP
Learn the ancient Korean art of Keum Boo: the attaching of thin sheets of 24kt gold to fine silver. This workshop is ideal both for those who have experience of jewellery making and would like to extend their skills, and also for beginners making a simple piece of jewellery. A piece of fine silver and 24ct gold foil are included. You may wish to bring a supply of your own, particularly if you have a specific piece of jewellery in mind to make during the workshop. Small amounts of fine silver may be available to purchase at the studio. Alternatively, please order your fine silver sheet and gold foil beforehand from one of the bullion dealers. Three-day Summer School

This workshop is for all levels. It is ideal both for those who have experience of jewellery making and would like to extend their skills and also for beginners setting out on their jewellery-making journey. You may wish to bring a supply of silver sheet and/or wire, particularly if you have specific pieces of jewellery in mind to make during the workshop. Small amounts of silver may be available to purchase at the studio. Alternatively, please order your metal beforehand from one of the bullion dealers. This workshop is a great opportunity to focus on creating jewellery to your own designs and to learn or extend your skills in a fun jewellery studio environment.

Two-day Etching/Photo-etching Workshop
2-DAY SHORT COURSE - Friday 12 & Saturday 13 July 2024: ETCHING / PHOTO-ETCHING WORKSHOP
This course is ideal for those who have some jewellery making experience and would like to extend their skills to include etching and photo-etching.
This two-day workshop is also suitable for beginners who are new to jewellery making, as no prior experience is assumed. You will be guided through the basic processes and techniques for creating etched designs on metal.
You can use your etched pieces at a later time for making a variety of jewellery designs, or other metal items such as bookmarks, key rings, or brass texture plates which can be used in roller-printing. You can also frame your etched pieces, or use them in Champlevé on one of our 8-week enamelling courses or 3-day experimental enamelling workshops.
Copper is included and some brass. You may wish to bring your own silver sheet (or copper/brass). Small amounts of sterling silver may be available to purchase at the studio. Alternatively, please order your silver sheet beforehand from one of the bullion dealers. Please contact me in advance of the course if you need advice on quantities and suppliers.
Some stock images will be available for the photo-etching segment, but if you have a specific image (or images) that you would like to use please prepare your image(s) and email to me beforehand. Contact me for information on preparation details. Then, using your prepared Word or PDF file, I will prepare a full page of your images (cost: £10) or half a page (cost: £5). A full page is 8.5 x 11 inches and half a page is 8.5 x 5.5 inches (this includes small margins).
This Etching workshop is a great opportunity to learn a new technique or extend your skills in a fun jewellery studio environment.

3-Day Granulation workshop
3-DAY SHORT COURSE - Thursday 10 Oct / Friday 11 Oct / Saturday 12 Oct 2024; GRANULATION: LEARN/PRACTISE THIS ANCIENT SKILL
Granulation is an ancient decorative art which was practised by the Etruscans, lost for centuries, and then rediscovered. This short course is ideally for those who have previously attended a jewellery course and would now like to extend their skills to include granulation. The course is also suitable for beginners, as it assumes no previous experience. Please note that no solder is involved. This course will teach the art of attaching tiny silver or gold granules, just as it was done thousands of years ago.
A piece of Britannia silver sheet and Britannia silver wire are included. You may wish to bring a supply of your own, particularly if you have a specific piece of jewellery in mind to make during the workshop. Small amounts of Britannia silver may be available to purchase at the studio. Alternatively, please order your Britannia silver sheet beforehand from one of the bullion dealers. If you wish to work in gold, you will need to purchase 24ct gold sheet and wire before the course from one of the bullion dealers.
